Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure done by your healthcare provider to treat uncomplicated spider veins and uncomplicated reticular veins. The treatment involves the injection of a solution into the affected veins.

It may be purely for cosmetic reasons to look good in clothing that show the legs. Sometimes these veins can be quite painful however or get traumatized with routine everyday activities as they are so near the surface of the skin. It will improve circulation and decrease the swelling of the legs.

Why would I think of doing sclerotherapy?

Who is a good candidate?
The varicose veins cannot be tortuous and thick. This can be easily identified in our free consultation. Those who have unsightly veins that do not have too many medical problems and are not obese are good candidates.
Is sclerotherapy a good therapy for varicose veins and spider veins?
Really thick, tortuous varicose veins are better treated by a surgeon. Some spider veins may be best treated with laser therapy. Sclerotherapy is a very effective method of destroying the appropriate veins.

What chemical is used in sclerotherapy?
The chemical we use is Asclera (polidocanol).The vessel to be treated is inserted with a very tiny needle and a tiny bit of the solution is injected.

What is the recovery time for the sclerotherapy?
The person comes to the office, and leaves the office the same day. It is imperative to have compression stockings to return home with. These should be worn for two to three weeks after the procedure. The session will not last more than 1 hour.

What are the risks?
Bleeding (patients on anticoagulants are contraindicated)
Hyperpigmentation –
Bruising – this will pass
Localised hives – if one is allergic
Tape compression blister
Deep Vein Thrombosis (which can become a Pulmonary Embolism if not detected)
Pulmonary Embolism (see above)
Localized hair growth (because of the better circulation
cutaneous necrosis
